# Translate a PDF on your device

> Translate a PDF into another language without sending it anywhere: Chrome’s built-in translator runs on your computer. Read it beside the original, save text.

## How it works

1. Drop a PDF. Its text is read page by page on this device, and the source language is detected.
2. Pick the language to translate into. The first time, Chrome downloads a small language pack for that pair; after that it works offline.
3. Read the translation page by page, show the original beside it, copy it or download a .txt file.

## Questions

### Is the document uploaded anywhere?

No. The translator is part of Chrome and runs on your computer. Only the language pack is downloaded, from Google, once per language pair.

### Which browsers work?

Chrome 138 or newer on Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS. The built-in translator is not available on phones or in other browsers yet; the page says so when it is missing.

### Does the translated PDF keep its layout?

No. You get the translated text, page by page, as a .txt file. Layout, pictures and forms are not rebuilt.

### What about scanned PDFs?

A scan has no text layer. Run it through OCR PDF first, then translate the result.
