Convert JPG to JPEG XL
Convert JPG to JPEG XL online free: many images at once, adjustable quality, metadata removed by default. Works with any phone photo. Nothing is uploaded.
JPEG XL is encoded by a 1.4 MB WebAssembly encoder (libjxl), downloaded once. Quality 100 is lossless. Safari 17+ and photo editors open JPEG XL; Chrome and Firefox don't yet, so keep a JPG copy for the web.
JPG
JPG is the most compatible image format: every phone, browser, editor and upload form accepts it.
JPG has no transparency; transparent areas are filled with a background colour you choose, white by default.
JPEG XL
JPEG XL is a newer format from the JPEG committee. iPhones from iOS 17 can save ProRAW photos in it.
Safari opens JPEG XL natively; elsewhere Nibbo decodes it on your device with a small WebAssembly decoder, so you can also convert JPG or PNG into it.
How it works
- Your JPG files are decoded by the browser on this device and saved as JPEG XL. Photos keep their orientation.
- Drop many files at once and download them one by one or as a ZIP.
- Metadata such as GPS location is removed by default; switch it off to keep EXIF in JPG files.
Questions
Why JPEG XL?
At the same quality a JPEG XL file is usually 30–60% smaller than JPG, keeps transparency and HDR, and quality 100 is truly lossless. The encoder is libjxl compiled to WebAssembly (about 1.4 MB, downloaded once). Safari 17+ and most photo editors open it; Chrome and Firefox don’t yet, so keep a JPG copy for the web.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Conversion happens in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
Which licence do the codecs use?
The AVIF and WebP encoders are Apache-2.0 builds of libavif and libwebp. The HEIC decoder is libheif (LGPL-3.0), loaded as a separate file rather than built into our code.
