Nibbo vs Canva, iLovePDF and Smallpdf: what is different and when to use which

Canva is for designing, iLovePDF and Smallpdf process files on their servers, Nibbo works on your device. An honest comparison: privacy, sign-up and limits.

Updated

Short answer: use Canva when you want to design something: a post, a presentation, a poster or a video from a template, alone or with a team. Use Nibbo when you already have a file and need one job done with it (compress a video, remove the vocals from a song, transcribe a recording, make a scan searchable) without uploading it and without an account. iLovePDF and Smallpdf are PDF services that process your file on their servers; Nibbo does the same kind of PDF jobs inside your browser.

The main difference: where your file goes

Canva, iLovePDF and Smallpdf are cloud services. Your file is uploaded to their servers: in Canva it is stored in your account, and iLovePDF and Smallpdf process it on their servers and delete it automatically after a while, according to their own policies.

Nibbo works the other way round. The page brings the tool to your browser, and your computer or phone does the work with technology built into the browser: WebCodecs and your graphics card for video, WebAssembly and WebGPU for OCR and the AI models. The file never leaves the tab. You can check it yourself in 30 seconds: Does that online converter upload your files?

When Canva is the better choice

Canva is a design tool, and a very good one. If you need a social media post, a presentation, a flyer, a logo or a short video built from a template, with stock photos, fonts, a brand kit and colleagues editing the same design, use Canva. Nibbo has no templates, no design canvas and no shared workspace, and it doesn’t try to.

When Nibbo is the better choice

When iLovePDF or Smallpdf make sense

Both are mature PDF suites with desktop and mobile apps, team accounts, cloud storage and e-signature workflows where you send a document to other people and track who has signed. If that is what you need, they are built for it. Nibbo covers the everyday PDF jobs (compress, merge, split, sign, PDF to Word, OCR) on your own device, without an account or a cloud copy.

FAQ

Is Nibbo a free alternative to Canva?

For file jobs, yes: compressing, converting, cutting, transcribing and OCR are free, with no account and no watermark. For designing posts and presentations from templates, no; that is what Canva is for.

Is Nibbo safer than iLovePDF or Smallpdf for confidential PDFs?

Nibbo never receives your file, so there is no copy on a server to delete later. With any service, including Nibbo, you can verify this in the browser’s Network tab while a file is processed.

Do I need an account to use Nibbo?

No. Open a tool page, drop the file and download the result.

Why is Nibbo free?

The work happens on your device, so Nibbo doesn’t pay for servers to process your files. That keeps the tools free, without a watermark, for files up to 3 GB.
