Reframe a landscape video for vertical screens
Convert a 16:9 video to 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok. Face tracking moves the crop with the people, so nobody is cut off. Runs on your device.
The window pans smoothly to keep the people in the picture, and cuts with the shot.
How it works
- A small face detector (YuNet, about 230 KB) scans frames a fifth of a second apart and links the faces into tracks. Click a face to stop following it.
- From the tracks, the window path is planned like a camera operator would move: it ignores small head movements, pans with an ease-in and ease-out when someone walks, and cuts with the shot instead of sweeping across it.
- Choose Follow for a moving window, Fixed for one still window where the people spend most of the clip, or Centre for a plain crop. Zoom in to frame a face closer.
- Every frame is then cropped and encoded again on your device with WebCodecs (H.264 in MP4). Audio is kept. A 1080p clip becomes 608×1080; 4K becomes 1216×2160.
Questions
Is the video uploaded?
No. The detector and the video encoder run in this tab. The only download is the detector itself, once; after that it works offline.
Why not just crop the centre?
In most interviews, vlogs and talks the person is off-centre, or two people sit at the sides. A centred crop cuts them off. The window here goes where the faces are.
What if no face is found?
The window stays centred and the page says so. Try the thorough scan for small or distant faces, or choose Centre to crop a clip with no people in it.
Which files work?
MP4, MOV and M4V videos your browser can play, up to 3 GB. Browsers without WebCodecs, or clips they cannot decode, go through the FFmpeg engine instead, which downloads once and is slower.
Can I pick the window by hand?
Not yet. Switch off the faces you do not want followed, use Fixed for a single still window, or zoom in and out. Hand-placed keyframes are planned.
