Online passport renewal accepts larger files (54 KB to 10 MB), so this preset also fits it.

The photo is cropped from the centre. To place the crop yourself, open it in the photo maker.

Output

How it works

  1. The photo is cropped from the centre to the required shape (square, 600–1200 px). Use the photo maker to place the crop yourself.
  2. It is compressed to the highest quality that fits under 240 KB. If the portal sets a minimum, a tiny file is padded with an invisible comment so it passes.
  3. EXIF data such as GPS location is removed by default.

Questions

Where do these numbers come from?

https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/visa-information-resources/photos/digital-image-requirements.html (600–1200 px square, max 240 KB, JPEG)

What background is needed?

White or off-white background. Nibbo does not change the background; take the photo against a plain wall or white paper.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is decoded, resized and compressed by your browser on this device. The page has no server that could receive it.

Why is the result a little under the limit?

Portals disagree on whether 1 KB is 1000 or 1024 bytes. We count the upper limit as 1000 bytes per KB and the lower limit as 1024, so the file passes either way.
