Nibbo vs HandBrake: desktop video converter or one in your browser
HandBrake is a free open-source desktop video transcoder with presets and a queue. Nibbo compresses video in the browser without installing anything. Compared.
Updated
TL;DR: both are free and both process video on your own computer. Choose HandBrake for full control: many presets, a queue for many files, MKV and WebM output and hardware encoders, in a desktop app. Choose Nibbo when you want to shrink a video to a size limit (Discord, Telegram, email) right now, on any device, without installing anything.

Where HandBrake is stronger
- Presets and control. HandBrake has tuned presets for many devices, custom presets, and settings for codec, bitrate, filters, audio and subtitle tracks3. Nibbo shows only the settings you need to hit a size.
- Queue for many files. You can set up several encode jobs and leave them running3. Nibbo compresses one video at a time.
- More codecs and containers. HandBrake supports H.265 and AV1, MKV and WebM, and NVIDIA, AMD, Intel and Apple hardware encoders3.
- No browser needed. It runs fully offline as a normal desktop program.
HandBrake does not work with DRM-protected video, and it can’t join clips into one3.
When to choose Nibbo
- You need one file under a limit, now. Pick a target such as 8, 25 or 50 MB, or the limit of an app such as Discord or Telegram. Nibbo works out the bitrate for you.
- No install allowed. Work and school computers often block installing programs. Nibbo only needs a browser.
- On a phone. HandBrake lists Windows, Mac and Linux1. Nibbo also compresses on Android and iPhone, right on the phone that recorded the video.
- Still private. Like HandBrake, Nibbo never uploads the video. You can check this in the Network tab of the browser’s DevTools.
Compress a video in Nibbo
- Open Compress video.
- Drop the video on the page, or tap to choose it.
- Pick the size you need in MB. Compress video for Discord already sets Discord’s limit.
- Wait while the graphics card encodes it, then download the MP4.
FAQ
Is Nibbo free?
Yes. Video compression is free with no account and no watermark, for files up to 3 GB.
Does Nibbo upload my video?
No. The video is encoded inside your browser tab with WebCodecs, and nothing is sent to a server.
Can Nibbo replace HandBrake?
For shrinking a single video to a size limit, yes. For batch queues, H.265 or AV1, MKV output or detailed settings, use HandBrake.
What can’t Nibbo do that HandBrake can?
Nibbo has no encode queue, no MKV or WebM output from the compressor, no H.265 or AV1, and no custom presets.
Does Nibbo work offline?
Yes. After you open the compressor once, it keeps working without a connection. HandBrake is offline from the start.
