Image to text: copy the text out of a picture

Extract text from photos, scans and screenshots, or paste an image straight from the clipboard. See every recognised line on the image, then copy it or save a .txt. Runs on your device.

    How it works

    1. Drop images, choose them, or press Ctrl+V to paste a screenshot. Many images at once are fine.
    2. Tesseract, the open-source OCR engine, reads each image in your browser. Small screenshots are enlarged first so tiny text is read better.
    3. Recognised lines or words are outlined on the image; boxes Nibbo is unsure about are dashed, so you know what to double-check.
    4. Edit the text if needed, then copy it or download it as a .txt file, one image or all at once.

    Questions

    Are my images uploaded?

No. Recognition happens on this device; only the OCR engine and language files (about 2–3 MB per language) are downloaded once from this site.

    Which languages can it read?

English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Uzbek (Latin and Cyrillic), Kazakh, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese and Korean, up to three at once.

    Can it read handwriting?

Only neat block letters, and not reliably. It is built for printed and on-screen text.

I have a scanned PDF, not an image.

Use OCR PDF: it adds a searchable text layer to the PDF and also gives you the text.
