Translate a PDF on your device

Translate a PDF into another language without sending it anywhere: Chrome’s built-in translator runs on your computer. Read it beside the original, save text.

How it works

  1. Drop a PDF. Its text is read page by page on this device, and the source language is detected.
  2. Pick the language to translate into. The first time, Chrome downloads a small language pack for that pair; after that it works offline.
  3. Read the translation page by page, show the original beside it, copy it or download a .txt file.

Questions

Is the document uploaded anywhere?

No. The translator is part of Chrome and runs on your computer. Only the language pack is downloaded, from Google, once per language pair.

Which browsers work?

Chrome 138 or newer on Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS. The built-in translator is not available on phones or in other browsers yet; the page says so when it is missing.

Does the translated PDF keep its layout?

No. You get the translated text, page by page, as a .txt file. Layout, pictures and forms are not rebuilt.

What about scanned PDFs?

A scan has no text layer. Run it through OCR PDF first, then translate the result.
